Phil Woods came here to Dayton for a gig with the
Dayton Jazz Orchestra. The following day he gave a clinic at Hauer
Music in downtown Dayton. It was a great opportunity to listen to
Phil tell stories of playing with people such as Dizzy Gillespie
and Thelonius Monk, and meeting Charlie Parker for the first time.
He then gave some suggestions on improvisation and listening. Most
amazing though was to sit right in front of him while he improvised
alone, and just listen to his amazing saxophone sound. To actually
meet one of my musical heroes was a tremendous privilege; especially
a man of Phil's stature.
