WebRespond: License & Disclaimer
General Statement
This version of WebRespond is provided as free software. The author gives
any individual or company the right to use and to distribute this applet
as long as this disclaimer and the rest of the WebRespond documentation
is included. For convenience this applet and associated documentation is
archived in 'WRESP10.ZIP' and is available through the
WebRespond
Homepage. By making this version of WebRespond free the author does
not waive his right to charge fees for later versions of WebRespond or
its associated software. This applet may not be sold for profit and only
reasonable fees for redistribution may be charged.
The author is not liable for any damage to equipment or loss of data
due to the use of this product on your computer or network. Although this
program has been tested on OS/2 and Win95, there is no expressed or implied
guarantee that this software will operate as intended on all systems and
under all conditions.
Warning for local use
Java is written as a secure language which limits access to disk drives
and other sensitive resources on a computer. This program can be downloaded
on to a local machine and run through a web browser or applet viewer; however,
by doing so the user is removing a layer of protection from a misbehaving
applet. If the user intends to use this code locally, make sure the code
is obtained from the author or from the program's web page. This is the
best way to assure yourself that the program is free from tampering.
Security of Data
This program does not use any security measures apart from those provided
by the basic functionality of the Java language. Due to the nature of accessing
material from the world wide web it is relatively easy for any individual
to access your question files and master files. This access compromises
the security of your student passwords and any quiz questions that need
to remain secure. It is strongly recommended that this program only be
used for review purposes. Although the password function indicates that
a particular student name was used, it does not guarantee the identity
of the individual using the student name. Additional measures must be enacted
by the quiz author to guarantee the identity of the users.
Use of Source Code
Source code is made available at the cost of $30. This offer only
applies to version 1.0 of WebRespond and does not include any technical
support from the author. Purchase of the source code allows the purchaser
to modify the code to fit their particular implimentation of WebRespond.
These modifications are restricted to changes in appearance and presentation
of the content within WebRespond. Modifications may also be made
in the format of the transmitted email messages. Multiple variants
of WebRespond may be made with a single purchase of the source code; however,
any variant must not change the basic functionality of WebRespond.
Any variant of WebRespond should be able to read in a master file, process
it, present the associated quiz questions, and generate the appropriate
results consistent with the definition of tags given with version 1.0 of
WebRespond.
Any variant of WebRespond may retain the name WebRespond; however, acknowledgment
of modification must be made in the method getAppletInfo() contained within
the class file generated from WebRespond.java. Any variant of WebRespond,
whether it retains the name WebRespond or not, must include credit to the
author of WebRespond through the returned value of the method getAppletInfo().
Variants of WebRespond must also include this license and disclaimer file
(disclaim.htm) with distributed class files. If a jar file is generated,
this file must be included.
Restrictions on the use of the source code beyond that which is discussed
above are as follows. The source code for WebRespond may not be used
to develop a competing quizzing applet for public release. Also,
the source code for WebRespond, whole or in part, may not be used in the
development other java applets or applications. Any use of the source
code from WebRespond beyond modifications for a particular implementation
of WebRespond is prohibited unless permission is given by the original
author. The source code for WebRespond remains the author's intellectual
property and purchase of the source code does not imply any transfer of
rights to the purchaser. Also purchase of the vs. 1.0 source code
does not provide any rights to the source code of any later version of
WebRespond. Rights to use the source code for modifications are restricted
to the purchaser of the source code. The source code may not be freely
distributed to other parties.
